I am enjoying this course, and have found that it compliments my role and skills as an onsite assessor, especially the modules revolving around designing and moderating assessments.

I really didn't know what to expect, and have found that it has opened up different possibilities with regards to training techniques. The practical component of the course, whereby you have to plan and deliver training to very specific criteria in the workplace has been very useful. Previously I had not set out lesson plans in a structured manner and have found that process beneficial.

Being on a course that involves people from other industries who are also involved in training has given me a broader perspective as well, my fellow trainees range from a Cleric, to a Freezing worker, Hospital worker, Disability Advocate and staff from private or public training agencies. It has been great to network and benchmark their skills and experience against what we are doing.

The whole ITO based training concept was first raised in 1998 and a number of staff from branches within Amcor Kiwi were chosen to train to be Site Assessors, of that group only 2 people, myself and one other who is now with Print NZ completed the course to become assessors. Our ITO was in a fledging state and the ITO training went in fits and starts and eventually fell over.

Hastings revived it about 2 & ½ years ago and at first we had resistance as “we've seen it all before and it didn't work then”, now we have a number of our staff on training agreements and it is offered to all new permanent staff as part of the induction process.

It's neat to see staff who would not consider signing an agreement previously now asking to sign up.
