Ross Baldwin - Team Leader, Corrugating Department I am on a different semester to Bruce and Keith as they started their course before me. As I don't have another Amcor person in the same class as me it is helpful to have a resource such as Bruce & Keith who are further along in their training to discuss ideas with. The first day I went to class I just went home with my head spinning, but now I can see how the course is like a big jig saw and the pieces are slotting in. We are really fortunate in that we have a great Trainer from Upskill, Peter Vaney –- the sessions are very interactive and Pete puts information in a way that is easily understood. The human element covered in the first few sessions gave me some extra skills to help put trainees at ease, as they can be nervous when I am assessing them. We recruit trades people as our tutors as often they are naturally good teachers, though they may not realise this. A course such as UpSkill’s gives these tutors the basic knowledge to have the confidence to become really good tutors. The fact that UpSkill’s course is based around the North Island gives us the chance for our staff to stay in their home town, and staff from different regions can complete the same course work in a similar environment.
